Here are a few guidelines to help you design your own unique fabric

Choose Your Fabric

Always consider what the fabric is going to be used for. This will inform what type of fabric you will choose to print on. Will it be used for decorative, soft furnishings? Will it be for your own comfort? Or do you need a durable fabric? A hard wearing, functional material for upholstery or drapery? If you are considering designing a fabric that will be used to look good but also have a purpose - like material used for a window treatment - then keep in mind that it will be exposed to strong sunlight. In this case, lining should always be used as it protects the fabric from fading. Likewise, interlining offers protection from drafts and noise and gives the fabric more body. In general linen is always better for heavy use, whereas silk or cotton are fabrics better suited for decorative use.

Compliment Your Interior

Make sure you think about how your fabric will coordinate with other materials in the room. Think of all the pieces of furniture you have, so you can keep an eye on complimenting your existing interior. Think about the look you want to create. Are you trying to make a statement and dramatically change your room or do you want your design to blend in with your décor? Do you want to create a look that is traditional, country or contemporary?

Be Imaginative With Colour

Colour is a powerful tool and can be used in many different ways. You do not always have to design your new fabric to match your wall colour - you can imaginatively use coordinating colours to compliment your existing décor. Neutral and lighter colours tend to be more versatile and blend easily with a wider range of other colours. They also open up a space, especially smaller rooms, and tend to feel fresher. However, darker colours can create a dramatic look, and provide stunning contrasts against lighter backgrounds. Rich, warm colours can also make a room feel cosy and safe.
